About Us

Big Bend Filipino-American Association, Inc.

The Big Bend Filipino-American Association, Inc. is a registered not-for-profit corporation based in Tallahassee, Florida. It was organized in Chattahoochee in 1981 with the goal of fostering cultural and social ties between the Filipinos and the community at large while generating resources towards charity and humanitarian causes. From its inception the BBFAA has grown significantly over the years due partly to the influx new immigrants. Various activities were embarked upon, to include cultural, civic, social and economic involvement in the community.

The By-laws and Constitution were ratified in 1992.  In the same year the association received its not-for-profit status from US IRS. Changes in its legal status have brought about a more focused direction. Its goals and objectives have been clearly defined making the association more efficient and effective. In its operation, committees have been established to effectively implement projects and programs designed to fulfill the objectives of the association. Activities have been set so members could inteact culturally and socially with one another.  Funding come from contribution, fees and other fund-raising activities, including grants from state agencies. In 2004, The BBFAA Scholarship Fund is established with a goal of providing financial support to underprivileged but deserving youth in the Philippines pursuing college education. At present the BBFAA has executed Memorandum of Agreement with three prominent public Universities in the Philippines. In 2005, BBFAA took the lead in establishing the Asian Coalition of Tallahassee (ACT) which is now the largest multi-racial multi-ethnic group in the City.  In 2006, the BBFAA hosted the regional conference of the National Federation of Filipino-American Associations where hundreds of delegates from the Southeastern Region attended. In 2008, the BBFAA entered into a Community Service partnership with City of Tallahassee Adopt-A-Street Project.

The BBFAA membership is open to all who share common interests with us. We welcome individuals who are interested in the Philippines and the Filipino culture regardless of ethnic origin. Being part of the bigger community, we believe that diversity is crucial to a strong society. We strive to uplift the status of ethnic minorities through education and promoting awareness of the underrepresented groups. With its increased and continued participation in the community, the BBFAA will play a vital role in understanding and instilling cultural diversity within the community.
